Training Modules

These modules contain essential courseware material supplemented with tailored information designed to meet training requirements and specific customer needs.   Examples include Instructor Candidate Course (ICC), Exercise Training (ET), Instructional Methodologies (IM), and other Specialized Training Courses.

Training Module Process: Phase II and III qualified instructors will support their primary Course of instruction to gain experience and increase their knowledge.  As opportunities become available, trainees will be placed into TM’s for upgrade training and to support unique customer requirements.

The Training Manager, supervisor and Training Branch Chief will be responsible for facilitating the upgrade training for those instructors who will support these requirements. Training Modules (TMs) will be used to qualify instructors in additional Course assignments.

The Training Module will provide a basic training flow and identify specific training qualification requirements.  It is designed to increase the instructor/trainee situational awareness of the specific training allowing the instructor to focus on the unique core mission and background of the unit and its impact on training.  Provide the instructor with information (unit, academic, role-play) to allow them to conduct assessments, make decisions, and adapt their instructional behavior to ensure unit-training needs are accomplished.

SERE Course: As a minimum the trainee will attend the course of assignment. As the trainee progresses through their Professional Education and Research Program they will be scheduled to attend or observe other SERE related courses as required.

Academic Instructor Methodology: Any individual selected to support academic instruction will be required to attend the Academic Instructor Methodology module. The trainee will be scheduled to attend this course at the earliest opportunity once assigned academic instructor duties.

Train the Trainer Module: Ops Chief, Training Branch Chief, and the Supervisor individually select the trainees as a Trainer or Senior Course Trainer.  Any trainee selected to perform trainer duties will complete the Train the Trainer Program. The trainee will also be required to complete all mentoring, advanced technique training courses, and additional training requirements listed in the MTL and PTP prior to qualification.

Course Lead Instructor Training: Ops Chief and Supervisors individually select trainees as a Course Lead Instructors. Any trainee selected to perform Course Lead duties will complete all Course Lead required mentoring, advanced technique training, and additional training requirements listed in the MTL and PTP prior to qualification.

MTT Lead Training: Ops Chief and supervisors individually select trainees as an MTT Lead. Any trainee selected to perform MTT Lead duties will complete all mentoring, advanced technique training, and additional training requirements listed in the MTL and PTP prior to qualification.

Manager Training: Senior Management will direct any advanced qualification training required to fulfill manager responsibilities.

Training Documentation Process

OJT Record: Each supervisor will maintain an individual training folder for each trainee. All evaluations and TOR’s will be posted within 5 working days following completion of a training evolution and/or evaluation. At the completion of a PTE, evaluations and TOR’s will be posted within 5 working days after return. All trainees and supervisors will review folders monthly for accuracy, and continuity. OJT Records will be available only to the trainee, assigned trainer, immediate supervisor, training manager, and senior management as required.  Each folder will include:

  • Tab 1: Master Training Plan & Master Task Listing
  • Tab 2: Education and Training Plan
  • Tab 3: Job Qualification Standard
  • Tab 4: Special Task Qualification & Recurring Training
  • Tab 5: Training Observation Report
  • Tab 6Instructor Evaluation Record

Education and Training Plan (ETP): refer to the records documentation section of the ETP for proper guidance.

Training Observation Report (TOR): The TOR is used to document training and evaluation of instructor and non-instructor personnel. This may occur while evaluating multiple tasks or training iterations occurring consecutively i.e. multiple tasks, role-plays or lessons being conducted concurrently. The TOR is also a tool used to monitor training, ensuring course standards and training activities are accomplished in accordance with applicable instructions and course documents. A TOR may be used to document training provided by a training manager, supervisor, trainer, or any other monitor/evaluator when observing or evaluating training tasks and placed in the individual’s OJT folder.  Supervisors will be responsible to document monthly training progress for each trainee using a TOR. Areas to include in a TOR:

  • Trainee observed, training phase, and date
  • Training window: This will identify the start and finish dates of the evaluation. Include actual hours engaged in training.
  • Training observed: Identify the specific training task(s) accomplished by the trainee, i.e. lessons, ARL’s/role-plays, other specific training actions or iterations.
  • Summary of progress: The first sentence will state whether the trainee’s progress has been satisfactory or unsatisfactory. When documenting the summary of progress, the evaluator will describe how effectively the trainee is progressing within their training plan.
  • Strengths: Document individual strengths. The evaluator will provide consideration for trainee experience and time in training when discussing strengths.  Specifically identify areas where the trainee excels.
  • Weaknesses: Identify areas where the trainee has had difficulties and requires additional training or assistance. Specifically identify problem areas that continue to be a barrier to training progress.
  • Remedial training: List all remedial training provided to the trainee and the amount of time required to correct training deficiencies. Future trainers will use this information as a reference for follow on training activities. Identify whether remedial training was successful or unsuccessful.
  • Action Items: Clearly identify and assign tasks that the trainee must accomplish. Assignments will include a completion date. The trainee’s follow-on trainer is required to ensure assignments were accomplished.
  • Recommendations: Recommend scheduling, additional training or guidance that will improve trainee progression. Provide clear recommendations to trainees, trainers, and supervisor.
  • Signature block: The signature block will include trainees and trainer/evaluator signature.

Evaluations: All evaluations will be documented on an Instructor Evaluation Form. The form will be used to qualify instructors on an individual task and is a comprehensive document that provides evaluators a qualitative means for evaluating trainee performance. There are three types of instructor evaluation forms: Academic, Role-Play, and Monitor Evaluations. The form provides a comprehensive tool that both evaluators and trainers can use to aid in the debriefing process. It ensures effective communication, continuity, and understanding of the trainee’s level of performance.

Qualification: As the trainee progresses, the Supervisor and Training Manager will track the trainees phase qualification level. When the trainee qualifies in the final block of instruction required for phase qualification, the Task Certifier will submit the final evaluation and a TOR to the Training Manager for review. After review and verification, the Training Manager will submit a qualification letter to the Training Branch Chief for review and approval by the Managing Director. The Training Manager will also notify QA to enter the trainee into the QA evaluation program.

Security: These forms will be marked and handled at the lowest classification level as possible. If a security classification is required, it will be handled and stored appropriately per the current security guidance.

Evaluation Form:  refer to the documentation section of the QA Operating Instruction for word pictures and proper guidance.
